In 2005, in a CM2 class (ten years old children), the O.R.M.E. has conducted an action and a reflection on the theme of death and bereavement. This video documentary investigates the work realized with the children at school and let the parents and the professionals in education and health in Belgium, in France and in Great-Britain speak.
The work with the children leant on the methodology in the research into training with putting into place : discussion groups on the death, work-groups in artistic expression and exercises of observation. To be frightened of the death has been verbalized as well as the feelings on the bereavement and the loss. The lack of answers from the adults on the questions about death - and the loneliness of the children being in mourning - have been obvious.
This kind of education about death showed by this documentary and suggested by the O.R.M.E. is like a preventive medicine. Furthermore it is connected with the initial spirit of the palliative care, whose the aim was to give again a human dimension to the death in our occidental societies, as well as to improve the quality of life.
This action as soon as childhood can deeply change the taboo about the death and less isolate the adults and the children being in mourning. But overall, it proves that it is not necessary to wait for a trigger to speak about death.
This documentary wakes the society on the fact that the bereavement is a problem of public health. The theme of the death unavoidably appears in classes, notably at the time of preventive actions against violence, aids, suicide…
