Valérie Lépine is a sexologist and education worker, and a graduate from the University of Quebec in Montreal.
She has visited Africa and Asia several times as an ambassador for promoting sexual health and preventing HIV/Aids. The prevalence of HIV/Aids, especially in young Africans, is on the increase and one cannot but notice that the prevention methods used to date are seriously limited.
Mrs. Lépine criticises the ABC method (Abstinence, BeFaithful and Condoms Use) which is one of the most widespread in the world. She speaks passionately about the BCC approach (Behaviour Change Communication). If high-risk behaviour, attitudes regarding condoms, abstinence or faithfulness, cultural or family influences or personal and social skills are taken into account, the chances of success will be greater. With young people, the concepts of pleasure, tenderness and identification are covered. Emphasis is also placed on loving relationships.
Valérie Lépine concludes by underlining that in the West, we have much to learn from the prevention practices used against HIV/Aids in Africa and Asia.
