Huntington's disease is a genetic disorder with no cure: anyone with the deficient gene eventually slides into a life of chaos and madness from about the age of forty. Families often hide the illness as though a terrible secret… For several years now, a test has been able to determine 100% whether or not someone has the disease. However, many hesitate when it comes to taking the test. Is it always so easy to know your fate?
The news was long awaited. The gene governing Leigh Syndrome French-Canadian Type remained elusive, to the great chagrin of many parents from the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. In this part of Quebec, one person in 23 carries the gene, while one child in 2000 is born with the disease. It would now seem that three different teams, each with different methods, have succeeded in identifying the culprit. This discovery paves the way to screening tests, as the genes responsible for the five major genetically recessive illnesses present in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region have now been found.
