Based on patient motivation and involvement, this alternative approach to care, first used to manage diabetes, is now used for 35 other conditions. This series, based on a concept of Pr Deteix and Pr Ronco describes the major findings and the progress of these 50 years. Research is honored in all aspects : basic, translational and clinical as well as in its applications in pediatric and adult nephrology, dialysis and transplantation.

Damien, Valérie and Jordana are three young Belgians from Liège. For different medical reasons they all suffer from terminal renal failure. Their life depends on dialysis (renal replacement therapy). This technique purifies their blood through a constant contact with the hospital environment.
