Heart failure is a very common condition, with approx. 15 million sufferers in Europe and 100,000 in Switzerland. It is the only cardio-vascular condition that continues to become more widespread every year. It is the main reason why people aged over 65 are admitted to hospital.
Some diseases are especially scary because they attack one of our most valuable assets: vision. This is the case of retinitis pigmentosa, an illness that affects one in 4000 in Belgium. At the beginning, the edges of objects and landscapes become blurred; then the degeneration of the retina causes a progressive loss of sight, eventually reaching complete blindness. But the good news is that recently several major advances have been made in understanding and treating this disease.
